By Dr. Keith Adams, Ed.D., CMAA

President & Founder, CKA SAVE Project, Inc.

There are moments in life when you realize that your work is bigger than a job.

For me, that realization has come through more than three decades in education, athletics, coaching, student support, and organizational leadership.

I have been a teacher.

I have been a coach.

I have been an Athletic Director.

I have worked in student support and school administration.

I have mentored young people.

I have researched student-athletes.

I have written about student-athletes.

And I have spent countless hours listening to students, parents, coaches, educators, administrators, and professionals talk about what happens when academics, athletics, and life collide.

Those experiences eventually led me to create the CKA SAVE Project.

I did not create CKA because I believed student-athletes needed another program.

I created it because I believed they needed a different way of thinking about development.

I wanted to build an organization that would look at the whole student—not simply the transcript, the athletic résumé, the scholarship offer, or the next level.

Because after more than 30 years in this work, I have learned something that continues to shape everything I do:

The next level is not the destination.

It is simply another opportunity to grow.

And our responsibility is to make sure young people are prepared to maximize that opportunity.

Why CKA Exists

The CKA SAVE Project was founded in 2009 around a simple conviction:

Student-athletes are students first.

That statement has guided my work from the beginning.

But I believe we have to do more than say it.

We have to build systems that actually reflect it.

Too often, we celebrate the athlete before we develop the person.

We celebrate the scholarship before we ask whether the student is prepared for college.

We celebrate the offer before asking whether the institution is the right fit.

We celebrate the NIL opportunity before teaching the student-athlete how to understand the opportunity.

We celebrate the transfer before asking what the move means academically, athletically, financially, professionally, and personally.

And sometimes we celebrate graduation without asking the most important question:

What is this young person prepared to do next?

That question is at the heart of CKA.

I Built CKA From Experience

My philosophy did not come from a textbook.

It came from experience.

It came from coaching.

It came from teaching.

It came from watching young people succeed.

It came from watching young people struggle.

It came from seeing talented students have opportunities but lack preparation.

It came from seeing students with strong grades struggle with professional communication.

It came from seeing athletes who could perform under pressure on the court or field struggle to transfer those same skills into the classroom or workplace.

And it came from realizing that we cannot simply tell young people to "find the balance."

We have to teach them how to find it.

That became a major part of my life's work.

Finding the Balance

My doctoral research examined the relationship between academic and sport motivation among NCAA Division I student-athletes.

That research eventually became part of a larger philosophy and ultimately my book, Finding the Balance: My Personal Journey to Academic and Athletic Success.

But Finding the Balance is about much more than academics and athletics.

It is about understanding that every part of a young person's development is connected.

The discipline required to become a great athlete can help create a great student.

The communication skills developed through teamwork can become professional communication skills.

The resilience learned after losing a game can become resilience in the classroom and workplace.

The accountability demanded by a coach can become personal accountability.

The preparation required before competition can become preparation for a career.

That is what I mean by Finding the Balance.

Balance does not mean giving 50 percent to academics and 50 percent to athletics.

It means learning how to give your best to the things that matter while understanding that success in one area should strengthen—not undermine—the others.

The Resume Gap

One of the concepts that has become central to my work is what I call the Resume Gap.

I have seen students with impressive grades who were not necessarily prepared for the demands of college.

I have seen talented athletes with impressive athletic résumés who had never been taught how to translate their athletic experiences into professional skills.

I have seen young people graduate with degrees while still struggling with communication, networking, financial literacy, professional branding, self-management, and career direction.

That is the Resume Gap.

It is the distance between:

What a transcript says.

What an athletic résumé says.

And what a young person can actually demonstrate.

A transcript tells me what courses a student completed.

An athletic résumé tells me what a student accomplished in competition.

But neither necessarily tells me:

Can this student communicate?

Can this student lead?

Can this student manage money?

Can this student build relationships?

Can this student solve problems?

Can this student navigate an organization?

Can this student advocate for themselves?

Can this student identify an opportunity?

Can this student create value?

Those are the questions I want CKA to help answer.

Structure. Discipline. Support.

Everything we do at CKA is built around the SDS Framework:

Structure. Discipline. Support.

Structure means giving students systems, expectations, routines, accountability, and measurable goals.

Discipline means teaching students to consistently execute those systems.

Support means making sure students have mentors, educators, coaches, professionals, and advocates who can help them navigate challenges and recognize opportunities.

I have learned throughout my career that motivation alone is not enough.

Talent alone is not enough.

Good intentions are not enough.

Students need structure.

They need accountability.

And they need people who believe enough in them to provide support while still holding them to a high standard.

That is the CKA way.

The 100/100 Standard

The other foundational principle of CKA is the 100/100 Standard.

100% Academic Excellence.

100% Athletic, Professional & Personal Development.

I intentionally use 100 percent twice.

Because I do not want young people to believe they have to sacrifice one part of themselves to succeed in another.

I want the student-athlete to understand that academic excellence matters.

Athletic development matters.

Professional development matters.

Personal development matters.

Leadership matters.

Financial literacy matters.

Relationships matter.

Life after sport matters.

All of it matters.

The goal is not to produce a student who is simply eligible.

The goal is to produce a student who is ready.

College-Ready Is Not Enough

For years, the traditional question has been:

"Can we get this student into college?"

I believe we have to ask a more important question:

"Will this student be prepared to succeed once they get there?"

College admission is an important milestone.

But it is not the destination.

Getting a scholarship is an accomplishment.

But it is not the destination.

Playing college athletics is an incredible opportunity.

But it is not the destination.

Graduation is a major accomplishment.

But even that is not the destination.

The destination is development.

That is why I use the term:

Sophomore-Ready.

I want students to arrive on their college campus with the skills, habits, confidence, communication ability, professional awareness, and self-management that many students do not develop until after their first year.

I want them to arrive prepared to contribute—not simply survive.

Building a Developmental Ecosystem

When people ask me what the CKA SAVE Project does, sometimes the easiest answer is:

A lot.

But there is a reason for that.

CKA was never designed to be just one service.

It is a developmental ecosystem.

Our work connects:

Academics + Athletics + Career + Financial Literacy + Professional Branding + Mentorship + Leadership + Life Skills

I believe those areas are connected.

A student who understands financial literacy is better prepared to make decisions.

A student who understands professional branding is better positioned to tell their story.

A student who understands time management is better equipped to balance academics and athletics.

A student who develops leadership skills is better prepared to contribute to an organization.

A student who learns how to advocate for themselves is better prepared to navigate college.

This is why holistic development matters.

CKA Career Launch Academy

One of the most important extensions of this philosophy is the CKA Career Launch Academy.

CLA is built around a fundamental question:

What happens after high school?

Too many students spend four years following a path without necessarily learning how to shape one.

CLA helps students become architects of their academic and professional futures.

We work on:

Academic skills
Career mapping
Major alignment
Professional branding
Executive presence
Financial literacy
Time management
Networking
Transition coaching
Goal setting
Institutional navigation
Professional decision-making

The objective is not to lower expectations.

It is the opposite.

We want to raise the standard.

I want students to understand that education is more than collecting credits.

It is about developing the capacity to use what you learn.

The CKA Post Graduate Basketball Academy

The CKA Post Graduate Basketball Academy, or PGA, represents another major extension of this philosophy.

The PGA is not simply designed to give a basketball player another year of basketball.

It is designed to provide a year of intentional development.

We are bringing together:

College academics
Athletic development
Academic management
Career preparation
NIL education
Financial literacy
Professional branding
Life skills
Mentorship
Experiential learning

I want our players to become more than college-ready.

I want them to become Sophomore-Ready.

Our philosophy is:

Prepare Better. Compete Longer. Graduate Stronger.

And I see the PGA as a long-term developmental partnership.

The vision is:

One Year of Development. Five Years of Strategic Support.

The goal is to help student-athletes maximize their collegiate experience, protect eligibility, accelerate development, build professional skills, develop financial literacy, create career opportunities, and prepare for life beyond sport.

The current CKA development plan targets a full PGA launch for August 1, 2028, with talent evaluation, recruitment, staffing, roster development, and onboarding occurring in the years leading to that launch.

CKA VIP: Beyond the Scholarship

Another initiative that is particularly important to me is the CKA Virtual Internship Program, or CKA VIP.

I created VIP because I understand something about student-athletes:

They are busy.

Very busy.

Traditional internships often assume students have large blocks of available time.

High-level student-athletes frequently do not.

So I asked a different question:

What if we stopped asking athletes to find more time and taught them how to maximize the time they already have?

That became the foundation of CKA VIP.

The program operates through an asynchronous, grace-based professional development model.

But this is not passive participation.

Our interns take on real responsibility.

They work in areas such as:

Fundraising
Revenue strategy
Marketing
Digital media
National research
Strategic events
Organizational operations

I want our students to leave with something tangible.

Not just another line on a résumé.

I want them to have evidence of what they can do.

Leadership.

Communication.

Teamwork.

Problem-solving.

Project management.

Professional responsibility.

That is how we begin closing the Resume Gap.

The Athletic Mindset Is Bigger Than Athletics

One of the ideas I continue to explore through my research, presentations, teaching, coaching, and consulting is the Athletic Mindset.

Athletics can teach incredible lessons.

Preparation.

Accountability.

Resilience.

Communication.

Leadership.

Goal setting.

Responding to failure.

Working with others.

Performing under pressure.

The problem is that we sometimes leave those lessons on the court, field, track, or playing surface.

I want to take them with us.

The Athletic Mindset should not disappear when the final whistle blows.

It should become part of how a young person approaches school, work, relationships, leadership, and life.

That is one of the reasons I continue to develop and present this work nationally.

The Odd Coaches Podcast: Creating a National Conversation

The Odd Coaches Podcast has become another important part of the CKA ecosystem.

Through the podcast, I have had the opportunity to speak with coaches, administrators, journalists, researchers, student-athletes, and leaders from across the sports landscape.

Our mission is captured in three words:

Coaching Wisdom. Real Talk. Unrestricted Access.

Through the OCP Global Access Initiative, we bring our audience into conversations happening in locker rooms, classrooms, sidelines, boardrooms, and throughout the sports industry.

Our Find the Balance Friday conversations are particularly meaningful to me because they allow us to explore the intersection of athletics, education, leadership, and life.

Recent guests have included Ross Dellenger, Cliff Warren, Jason Stahl, Keri Alexander Luchowski, and Chick Hernandez.

Every conversation reinforces something I have learned throughout my career:

Every coach has a story. Every student-athlete has a story. Every leader has a journey.

Sometimes the greatest lessons are found in the experiences that never appear in a box score.

Research Matters

I am a practitioner.

But I am also a scholar.

Those two identities are not separate for me.

My research informs my practice.

And my practice informs the questions I research.

CKA has engaged in research surrounding:

Student-athlete motivation
Academic and athletic success
The changing collegiate athletics environment
Collective bargaining
Student-athlete development
Coaching and leadership
Alternative education

I have presented this work through national conferences, symposiums, and professional organizations.

I believe practitioners should be willing to ask difficult questions—and then use evidence to search for better answers.

That is part of our responsibility.

Why National Partnerships Matter

CKA has grown beyond the idea of being a local program.

Our vision is national.

But national does not mean disconnected.

It means building relationships.

It means working with schools.

Coaches.

Colleges and universities.

Businesses.

Community organizations.

Researchers.

Sponsors.

Donors.

Professional organizations.

Families.

And, most importantly, students.

I believe meaningful change happens when people who care about the same problem decide to work together.

That is why partnerships matter so much to CKA.

What I Am Building

When I look at CKA today, I do not simply see a nonprofit.

I see a vision that is continuing to take shape.

I see the Career Launch Academy.

I see the Post Graduate Basketball Academy.

I see CKA VIP.

I see the Odd Coaches Podcast.

I see research.

I see professional development.

I see consulting.

I see mentorship.

I see opportunities for young people to develop professional identities before they need them.

And I see an organization that can help bridge the spaces between education, athletics, career development, and life.

That is the vision.

Why I Keep Doing This

After more than 30 years in education and athletics, I have learned that success is rarely about one moment.

It is about preparation.

It is about relationships.

It is about consistency.

It is about having someone who believes in you.

It is about learning from failure.

It is about being willing to change.

It is about understanding that talent can open a door—but preparation determines what happens after the door opens.

That is why I created CKA.

I have seen too many talented young people reach an opportunity without being prepared to maximize it.

I have seen students who needed someone to help them see what was possible.

I have seen athletes who needed help translating their athletic experiences into professional opportunities.

I have seen families who simply needed someone to help them navigate a complicated system.

And I have seen what happens when the right student receives the right support at the right time.

That is why I keep going.

The CKA Promise

The traditional model asks:

Can we get the student into college?

I ask:

Can we prepare the student to succeed once they arrive?

The traditional model asks:

Can the athlete compete?

I ask:

Can the athlete compete, learn, lead, build a brand, manage resources, develop relationships, graduate, and prepare for life beyond sport?

That is the difference between:

College Readiness and Sophomore-Readiness.

A résumé and a professional identity.

Participation and preparation.

An opportunity and the ability to maximize that opportunity.

The Future We Are Building

My vision for CKA is not simply to create successful athletes.

It is to help create successful people.

People who understand how to use their education.

People who understand how to use their athletic experiences.

People who understand how to build relationships.

People who understand how to manage resources.

People who understand how to communicate.

People who understand how to lead.

People who understand how to adapt.

And people who understand that their value does not disappear when their athletic career ends.

That is the future I want to help build.

Join the CKA Movement

I have spent more than 30 years working with students, athletes, coaches, educators, administrators, families, and organizations.

One thing I have learned is that meaningful change does not happen alone.

It takes a team.

That is why I am not simply asking people to support an organization.

I am inviting people to become part of a movement.

If you believe student-athletes deserve more than a scholarship...

If you believe academic achievement and athletic achievement should work together...

If you believe young people deserve access to mentors, professional experiences, career guidance, financial literacy, and leadership development...

If you believe that where a student comes from should not determine how far that student can go...

Then there is a place for you at CKA.

Let's Start a Conversation

I believe some of the most important opportunities in life begin with a conversation.

That is why I do not want people to feel that they need to have everything figured out before they contact CKA.

You do not have to know exactly what program you need.

You do not have to know what partnership level makes sense.

You do not have to know how much you want to contribute.

You simply need to know that you want to learn more.

Start the conversation.

Tell us what you need.

Tell us what you want to build.

Tell us how you want to help.

And let's see what we can accomplish together.

Because CKA was never built simply to provide services.

CKA was built to create opportunities.

And creating those opportunities requires all of us.

Students.

Parents.

Coaches.

Educators.

Administrators.

Businesses.

Sponsors.

Donors.

Researchers.

Mentors.

Community leaders.

Champions.

There is a place for you here.

One Year to Prepare. Five Years to Compete. A Lifetime to Benefit.

This is where I believe the CKA vision ultimately leads.

One Year to Prepare.

Give young people the structure, discipline, support, education, mentorship, and experiences they need.

Five Years to Compete.

Help them navigate the collegiate experience with intention, accountability, and strategic support.

A Lifetime to Benefit.

Make sure the lessons learned through education and athletics continue to create value long after competition ends.

Because the goal was never simply to get a student to the next level.

The goal is to prepare them for every level that follows.

That is why I believe in the CKA SAVE Project.

That is why I believe in Finding the Balance.

That is why I believe in the 100/100 Standard.

That is why I believe in Structure, Discipline, and Support.

And that is why I will continue to ask the same question:

How can we help this young person become the best version of themselves—not just as a student or athlete, but as a person?

That is the work.

That is the mission.

That is the vision.

And for me, it is personal.

Prepare Better. Compete Longer. Graduate Stronger.

Building Better Students. Developing Better Athletes. Creating Better Futures.
