Welcome to the evolving world of college athletics, where we are on the brink of significant academic and athletic transformation. As we navigate these changes, it's important to reflect on both the past and the future.
Academically, there has been a noticeable shift away from the pursuit of a college degree. Factors such as court cases, the implementation of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policies, the growing significance of the transfer portal, and a general decline in academic rigor for many high school student-athletes have made it more challenging to emphasize the importance of quality education alongside athletic participation.
Athletically, student-athletes now enjoy greater freedom of choice and movement, which brings both opportunities and responsibilities. As a famous superhero once said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Unfortunately, many student-athletes are now making decisions driven by money, status, and prestige rather than focusing on the goal of obtaining a college degree. On the Odd Coaches Podcast, I often emphasize that while there is no single right way to approach these decisions, there are preferred ways that should be considered. Student-athletes must be exposed to diverse perspectives to make informed choices.
As college student-athletes return to school, we must confront the consequences of our past inaction in supporting them holistically. For example, in college football, we now have a 12-team playoff amidst conference realignment, resulting in teams from the Atlantic Coast competing in the same conference as teams from the Pacific Coast. This geographic spread poses challenges for student-athletes who must still meet academic credit requirements for graduation. There is a growing concern that the focus on playing time is overshadowing the importance of earning a degree.
As we embark on this milestone year of change, remember to Stay CONNECTED. The Stay
CONNECTED framework serves as a navigational guide for student-athletes and their supporters, helping them manage the daily stresses of life. You can find the full Stay CONNECTED guide and additional resources in my book, "Finding the Balance: My Personal Journey to Academic and Athletic Success." The hard copy is available on our website (www.ckasaveproject.org), and digital versions are available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
The Stay CONNECTED plan includes nine key actions:
1. Continue to stay engaged
2. Own your learning
3. Nutrition is important
4. Never give up
5. Enjoy the journey
6. Check on each other
7. Take time for yourself
8. Exercise regularly
9. Dream big
