The Multi-Sport Perspective
This April, as part of the CKA SAVE Project's "Intern Voices" series, I had the unique opportunity to step off the field and into the boardroom. While most fans were focused on the brackets in Indianapolis, I was serving as an Executive Assistant during the NABC Coaches Convention.
Being immersed in an environment filled with High School and College Basketball coaches, Graduate Assistants (GAs), and industry executives was a transformative experience. It shifted my perspective from seeing sports strictly through the lens of a player to understanding it as a complex, multi-billion-dollar industry.
The "Wild West" of NIL
One of my primary objectives during the convention was to analyze how Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) is fundamentally restructuring the collegiate landscape. My research confirmed that we are currently in a "Wild West" era. Despite NIL's dominance, there is a distinct lack of universal regulation. Instead of a standard playbook, schools and athletes are navigating a series of broad, often ambiguous guidelines. This creates a significant gap in how rules are enforced and how they will evolve, making education — like that provided by the CKA SAVE Project — essential for the modern athlete.
Contractual Flexibility vs. Consistency
A recurring theme throughout the convention was the lack of standardization in NIL contracts. Most current agreements utilize "loose language," which offers flexibility but also creates layers of complexity that can be difficult to manage without professional guidance.
The Big Ten Conference stood out as a leader in this space, currently utilizing standardized NIL contracts to create a baseline of protection for both the institution and the athlete. This move toward consistency is a vital blueprint that other conferences must consider to ensure long-term stability for student-athletes.
Key Concepts for the Modern Athlete
To navigate the business side of the Final Four, I mastered technical terminology used by elite administrators. Two concepts are critical for every recruit to understand:
Closing the Gap: The CKA VIP Advantage
Attending the NABC Convention reinforced that NIL isn't just about a paycheck — it's about marketing, law, and institutional adaptation. I am incredibly grateful to the CKA SAVE Project's Virtual Internship Program (VIP) for this platform.
Many student-athletes face a "Resume Gap" because their rigorous training schedules prevent traditional employment. The CKA VIP provides a Grace-Based platform to gain high-level, real-world experience without sacrificing athletic commitments. The cheering in the stadium eventually stops, but the business acumen I gained in Indianapolis is a toolkit I will carry throughout my collegiate career and beyond.
